3rd Molar Surgery

Removal of 3rd molars or commonly called wisdom teeth is an inevitable procedure that almost all humans need due to lack of adequate space in the jaw for their eruption. The lack of space for complete eruption of the 3rd molars in the mouth creates a problem called impacted 3rd molars where the tooth is partially or not at all erupted and create pathological problems. The 3rd molars come to life around the age of 12 years old and they reach complete formation around 18 years old. In general it is recommended to remove the impacted 3rd molars before they complete their formation for several reason such as possibility of nerve damage, infection, pushing other teeth around due to pressure, periodontal problems endangering adjacent teeth and jaw tumor formation called ameloblastoma. Thus it is recommended to evaluate the condition of 3rd molars as early as 12 years old and plan appropriate treatment accordingly.
